There has long been an upsurge in the building of art museums, and it would seem to be currently undergoing a second peak, with the Kunsthaus in Bregenz, the Museum of the Beyeler Fondation near Basel, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Moderna und Arkitektur Museet in Stockholm all opening within a year. The Tate Gallery of Modern Art which is being built by Herzog & de Meuron in a former power station on the bank of the river Thames in London is to be completed in May 1999. Gehry, Jacques Herzog, Richard Meier, Rafael Moneo, Jean Nouvel, Renzo Piano and Peter Zumthor- reveal the wide spectrum of design in contemporary museum building. In the Pavilion at the Beyeler Fondation, the interaction of nature, light and the presentation of art is an impressive experience. Jean Nouvel perceives the museum as a public place, bringing the various areas of 'urban chaos' into contact with each other. A total of eight projects are presented each of which differs completely in function and size.
