Introduction to Residential Layout PDF
By:Mike Biddulph
Published on 2007-03-30 by Routledge

Introduction to Residential Layout is ideal for students and practitioners of urban design, planning, engineering, architecture and landscape seeking a comprehensive guide to the theory and practice of designing and laying out residential areas. Mike Biddulph provides a clear and coherent framework from which he offers comprehensive practical advice for designers of housing developments. Referring to a wealth of international examples, this is a richly illustrated, accessible resource covering the whole range of issues that should be considered by anyone engaging in the planning and design of a new residential scheme. A successful residential development must work on many levels – financial, social and environmental. This book includes analysis of commercial viability, the importance of place making, environmental sustainability and designing accessibility. Mike Biddulph details successful approaches to designing out crime and maximising permeability as part of an integrated approach to urban design. Highly illustrated throughout, this work will show you how to turn design aspirations and principles into practical design solutions. Written without preconceptions, Introduction to Residential Design highlights the strengths and weaknesses of particular design solutions to encourage both depth of thought and creativity. Making Room for People PDF
By:Lei Qu,Evert Hasselaar
Published on 2011 by Techne Press

Making Room for People elaborates on preferences in housing. It explores how users, occupants, and citizens can express their needs, searching for the enhancement of individual choice and control over their residential environment, and the predicted positive spin-off's for urban collectives. The central question is: What are the conditions under which an increase of people's choice and voice over the places they inhabit contribute to more liveable urban areas? The options to make choices and to have a say in urban design and housing matters are used as a conceptual framework. 'Choice' and 'voice' are the main concepts that structure the empirical material.

Art museums into the 21st century PDF
By:Gerhard Mack
Published on 1999 by Birkhauser

There has long been an upsurge in the building of art museums, and it would seem to be currently undergoing a second peak, with the Kunsthaus in Bregenz, the Museum of the Beyeler Fondation near Basel, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Moderna und Arkitektur Museet in Stockholm all opening within a year. The Tate Gallery of Modern Art which is being built by Herzog & de Meuron in a former power station on the bank of the river Thames in London is to be completed in May 1999. Conversations with the architects -Frank O. Gehry, Jacques Herzog, Richard Meier, Rafael Moneo, Jean Nouvel, Renzo Piano and Peter Zumthor- reveal the wide spectrum of design in contemporary museum building. In the Pavilion at the Beyeler Fondation, the interaction of nature, light and the presentation of art is an impressive experience. Jean Nouvel perceives the museum as a public place, bringing the various areas of 'urban chaos' into contact with each other. A total of eight projects are presented each of which differs completely in function and size.

Living Downtown PDF
By:Paul Groth
Published on 1999-01-01 by Univ of California Press

From the palace hotels of the elite to cheap lodging houses, residential hotels have been an element of American urban life for nearly two hundred years. Since 1870, however, they have been the target of an official war led by people whose concept of home does not include the hotel. Do these residences constitute an essential housing resource, or are they, as charged, a public nuisance? Living Downtown, the first comprehensive social and cultural history of life in American residential hotels, adds a much-needed historical perspective to this ongoing debate. Creatively combining evidence from biographies, buildings and urban neighborhoods, workplace records, and housing policies, Paul Groth provides a definitive analysis of life in four price-differentiated types of downtown residence. He demonstrates that these hotels have played a valuable socioeconomic role as home to both long-term residents and temporary laborers. Also, the convenience of hotels has made them the residence of choice for a surprising number of Americans, from hobo author Boxcar Bertha to Calvin Coolidge. Groth examines the social and cultural objections to hotel households and the increasing efforts to eliminate them, which have led to the seemingly irrational destruction of millions of such housing units since 1960. He argues convincingly that these efforts have been a leading contributor to urban homelessness. This highly original and timely work aims to expand the concept of the American home and to recast accepted notions about the relationships among urban life, architecture, and the public management of residential environments.

Begin with the Past PDF
By:Mabel O. Wilson
Published on 2016 by Smithsonian Institution

|The Building of the National Museum of African American History and Culturetraces the making of this unparalleled museum. Founding director Lonnie G. Bunch III described it as |ten years in the making, and 100 years in the making,| and Mabel O. Wilson explores that effort in her narrative. As she discovers, initial calls for a permanent place to collect, study, and present African American history and culture in the early twentieth century never got off the ground. In the late 1990s, the notion began to gain momentum from increasing public interest and Congressional support. In 2003 the museum was officially established. Yet the work of the museum was only just beginning. Wilson takes an in-depth look at the selection of the director, site, and architects in the years that followed. Rising on the National Mall next to the Washington Monument, the museum is a tiered bronze beacon inviting us to understand our past and embrace our future. Wilson explores how the |four pillars| of the museum's mission shaped its powerful structure, and she teases out the rich cultural symbols and homages layered into the design of the building and its surrounding landscape. This book is an important inside look at the making of a monument.|
