The Children's Culture Reader PDF
By:Henry Jenkins
Published on 1998-10-01 by NYU Press

Stock market euphoria and blind faith in the post cold war economy have driven the topic of poverty from popular and scholarly discussion in the United States. At the same time the gap between the rich and poor has never been wider. The New Poverty Studies critically examines the new war against the poor that has accompanied the rise of the New Economy in the past two decades, and details the myriad ways poor people have struggled against it. The essays collected here explore how global, national, and local structures of power produce poverty and affect the material well-being, social relations and politicization of the poor. In updating the 1960s encounter between ethnography and U.S. poverty, The New Poverty Studies highlights the ways poverty is constructed across multiple scales and multiple axes of difference. Questioning the common wisdom that poverty persists because of the pathology, social isolation and welfare state |dependency| of the poor, the contributors to The New Poverty Studies point instead to economic restructuring and neoliberal policy |reforms| which have caused increased social inequality and economic polarization in the U.S. Contributors include: Georges Fouron, Donna Goldstein, Judith Goode, Susan B. Hyatt, Catherine Kingfisher, Peter Kwong, Vin Lyon-Callo, Jeff Maskovsky, Sandi Morgen, Leith Mullings, Frances Fox Piven, Matthew Rubin, Nina Glick Schiller, Carol Stack, Jill Weigt, Eve Weinbaum, Brett Williams, and Patricia Zavella. |These contributions provide a dynamic understanding of poverty and immiseration| --North American Dialogue, Vol. 4, No. 1, Nov. 2001

Childhood Psychological Disorders PDF
By:Alberto Bursztyn
Published on 2011 by ABC-CLIO

Approximately 12 percent of children in American schools have been identified as disabled in ways that interfere with their capacity to learn. Far from static, the field of childhood disabilities is changing and evolving as the understanding of disabling conditions is contested within and across disciplines. Parents of children with disabilities often find themselves in new, lonely, and bewildering territory, presented with conflicting advice and treatment options. This book is designed to help. Childhood Psychological Disorders: Current Controversies was compiled to disentangle contemporary controversial issues, contributing to a fuller understanding of the needs of children with disabilities and the families raising them. The book focuses on social, behavioral, and psychological dimensions of childhood disability. Specific, topical essays highlight the current state of knowledge and the nature of opposing arguments among specialists in various disciplines. The book opens with a consideration of the historical and social context of child disability, addressing the evolution of disability concepts and the changing nature of disability as a social/cultural phenomenon. Disability's impact on the family system and schools is explored, too, from the vantage point of educators, children, and their parents and siblings. Subsequent chapters examine such diagnoses as early onset bipolar disorder, autism, ADHD, the educational label Emotionally Handicapped/Disturbed (EH/D), food allergies and related disorders, and Gender Identity Disorder (GID). Alberto M. Bursztypi, PhD, is professor of school psychology and special education at Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY, and professor of urban education at The Graduate Center, City University of New York. Dr. Bursztyn edited the The Praeger Handbook of Special Education and is a coauthor of Rethinking Multicultural Education: Case Studies in Cultural Transition.

Citizen, Mother, Worker PDF
By:Emilie Stoltzfus
Published on 2004-07-21 by UNC Press Books

During World War II, American women entered the workforce in unprecedented numbers, and many of them relied on federally funded child care programs. At the end of the war, working mothers vigorously protested the termination of child care subsidies. In Citizen, Mother, Worker, Emilie Stoltzfus traces grassroots activism and national and local policy debates concerning public funding of children's day care in the two decades after the end of World War II. Using events in Cleveland, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; and the state of California, Stoltzfus identifies a prevailing belief among postwar policymakers that women could best serve the nation as homemakers. Although federal funding was briefly extended after the end of the war, grassroots campaigns for subsidized day care in Cleveland and Washington met with only limited success. In California, however, mothers asserted their importance to the state's economy as |productive citizens| and won a permanent, state-funded child care program. In addition, by the 1960s, federal child care funding gained new life as an alternative to cash aid for poor single mothers. These debates about the public's stake in what many viewed as a private matter help illuminate America's changing social, political, and fiscal priorities, as well as the meaning of female citizenship in the postwar period.

Last Child in the Woods PDF
By:Richard Louv
Published on 2008-04-22 by Algonquin Books

The Book That Launched an International Movement “An absolute must-read for parents.” —The Boston Globe “It rivals Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring.” —The Cincinnati Enquirer “I like to play indoors better ’cause that’s where all the electrical outlets are,” reports a fourth grader. But it’s not only computers, television, and video games that are keeping kids inside. It’s also their parents’ fears of traffic, strangers, Lyme disease, and West Nile virus; their schools’ emphasis on more and more homework; their structured schedules; and their lack of access to natural areas. Local governments, neighborhood associations, and even organizations devoted to the outdoors are placing legal and regulatory constraints on many wild spaces, sometimes making natural play a crime. As children’s connections to nature diminish and the social, psychological, and spiritual implications become apparent, new research shows that nature can offer powerful therapy for such maladies as depression, obesity, and attention deficit disorder. Environment-based education dramatically improves standardized test scores and grade-point averages and develops skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and decision making. Anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that childhood experiences in nature stimulate creativity. In Last Child in the Woods, Louv talks with parents, children, teachers, scientists, religious leaders, child-development researchers, and environmentalists who recognize the threat and offer solutions. Louv shows us an alternative future, one in which parents help their kids experience the natural world more deeply—and find the joy of family connectedness in the process. Now includes A Field Guide with 100 Practical Actions We Can Take Discussion Points for Book Groups, Classrooms, and Communities Additional Notes by the Author New and Updated Research from the U.S. and Abroad

Care planning in residential care for older people in Scotland PDF
By:Ian Mallinson
Published on 1996-11 by

This is a timely and important book. Care plans are now utilised extensively in residential care. Until this study, no assessment has been made of the way care planning is conducted, nor of its effectiveness. In this research, a census of all establishments in Scotland initially explores structures involved. Practice is then examined in three establishments.Recommendations are made to increase the effectiveness of systems. Central to effective practice appears to be sound management and accountable relationships. Without these, care plans may contribute to rigid routines and to an instrumental checking of activity. Service users need to be enabled to take control of their own destinies.Through recommendations for change, the author develops a platform for a new era of sound residential practice.

Geriatric residential care PDF
By:Robert D. Hill,Brian L. Thorn,John Bowling,Anthony Morrison
Published on 2002 by Psychology Press

This book's main goal is to examine the concept of residential care from a psychological perspective. The chapter authors espouse a psychological approach to long-term residential care and an effort is made throughout the text to present a model of care that encompasses the whole individual. Since psychologists are being increasingly asked to provide consultation to long-term residential care facilities, the need for psychologically-based care models has become apparent. This text offers assistance in developing and maintaining residential care environments that maximize quality of life and personal well-being in the presence of declining physical and emotional resources that are associated with the vicissitudes of living into advanced aging. Geriatric Residential Care is divided into four parts. Part I addresses psychological and social issues facing the frail elderly who are candidates for, or are living in residential care settings. Part II addresses issues in the assessment of individuals in residential care. Part III highlights the design and execution of intervention strategies in residential care. Part IV addresses how organizational aspects of residential care contexts can optimize the quality and meaningfulness of care.
