This is a timely and important book. Care plans are now utilised extensively in residential care. Until this study, no assessment has been made of the way care planning is conducted, nor of its effectiveness. In this research, a census of all establishments in Scotland initially explores structures involved. Practice is then examined in three establishments.Recommendations are made to increase the effectiveness of systems. Central to effective practice appears to be sound management and accountable relationships. Without these, care plans may contribute to rigid routines and to an instrumental checking of activity. Service users need to be enabled to take control of their own destinies.Through recommendations for change, the author develops a platform for a new era of sound residential practice.
